The Ebell of Los Angeles

Discover how LG Air Conditioning Technologies provided an innovative VRF solution to The Ebell of Los Angeles and HVAC comfort to their guests throughout the complex.

Project Overview

For more than a century, The Ebell of Los Angeles and the accompanying Wilshire Ebell Theater have participated in and encouraged the educational, cultural, and social growth of the Los Angeles community. Since its opening, The Ebell of Los Angeles, which houses a performing arts theater, office spaces, and smaller event rooms, has hosted musical performances and lectures by world leaders and top artists, including Judy Garland, Igor Stravinsky, Stevie Wonder, Michelle Obama, and more. However, with the need to replace old, inefficient cooling towers and a chiller system, the management team sought a new innovative HVAC solution to address the requirements of the theater and occupants throughout the larger complex.

The Challenge

The facility management team required a versatile system to maintain the aesthetically historic qualities of The Ebell of Los Angeles’ recognized status on the National Register of Historic Places and meet the theater’s needs to cool, heat, and dehumidify the front and backstage areas. Additionally, the system needed to provide air conditioning for the building’s event hosting spaces. The Ebell of Los Angeles’ architecture presented a substantial obstacle due to the structural difficulties of installing outdoor units on the building’s roof, which meant the new system would have to fit in two places: the confines of the basement, which housed the old chiller; and the exterior of the theater.

The Solution

After evaluating the criteria, the building’s General Manager and Chief Operating Officer, Philip Miller, in conjunction with mechanical engineering firm Athena Engineering, designed an efficient and seamless solution that would allow for occupant comfort in the theater and event spaces. DMG Corporation, the project’s HVAC Equipment Solution team, recommended LG AHU Conversion Kits paired with Multi V™ 5 Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) condensing units. Due to the unique aspects and structure of the building, Athena Engineering designed a custom-built system, which was easily installed on the exterior of the theater. The new units feed into LG’s AHU Conversion kits housed in the theater’s basement, and LG’s MultiSITE™ Communications Manager was installed to allow the LG systems to communicate with third-party controls for seamless system management.
